A lot of people put off the Zone because they think they'll have to cook complicated meals every day. The truth is that most Zone meals are very simple: a portion of protein, vegetables and a little olive oil. If you can boil an egg and turn on the oven, you already have most of what you need.
When you're not sure what to cook, think of your plate in three parts:
This isn't a precise calculation, but it's a good start. When you want accuracy, weigh your food and add it to your Diary in ZoneIt. It will show you whether the meal is balanced.
Ground Beef and Egg Nests take just two ingredients: lean ground beef and eggs. Shape the beef into nests, crack an egg into each one, and the oven does the rest in about 30 minutes. The dish is almost entirely protein, and that's the first lesson: it needs carbs and fat alongside it.
That's why the second recipe is Mashed Potatoes: potatoes, a little butter and low-fat milk, ready in half an hour. It has carbs and fat but almost no protein. Neither dish is balanced on its own, but together with a fresh salad they make a complete Zone plate. The app shows you exactly how much of each to serve.
The third is Homemade Chicken Liver Pâté: chicken livers with shallots, garlic and thyme, blended with sour cream. Make it once and it lasts for several breakfasts. Spread it on a slice of whole-grain bread or eat it with fresh vegetables to add the carbs.
The biggest relief for a beginner cook is not having to cook every day. Make two or three things on Sunday, divide them into portions, and during the week just add a fresh salad. It's one of the small habits that make the Zone easier.
If you have a favorite family recipe, enter it in the Zonator in ZoneIt and see how many blocks it has. Often it only takes a few small changes to make it Zone-friendly.
