Zone Diet Calculator: How Many Blocks Do You Need per Day? (1/1)

The Zone diet doesn't count calories. It counts blocks: small, balanced portions of protein, carbs and fat. The big question when you start is simple: how many blocks should you eat each day? Your number depends on your lean body mass and how active you are. Here's how to calculate it step by step, and how the ZoneIt app does it for you.

What is a Zone block?

One Zone block is made of three parts:

  • 1 protein block = 7 g of protein
  • 1 carb block = 9 g of carbohydrates
  • 1 fat block = 1.5 g of added fat (about 3 g in total, since protein foods already contain some fat)

Every meal has the same number of protein, carb and fat blocks. That's what keeps you in the classic 40/30/30 balance without counting calories.

How to calculate your daily Zone blocks

Step 1: Estimate your body fat percentage

You only need a tape measure. Measure your height, your waist at the navel and your neck. Women also measure their hips at the widest point. These measurements give a good estimate of your body fat percentage, the same method ZoneIt uses.

Step 2: Find your lean body mass

Lean body mass is everything you weigh except fat: muscle, bone, organs and water. Multiply your weight by the share that isn't fat.

Example: 143 lb at 30% body fat → 143 × 0.70 ≈ 100 lb of lean body mass.

Step 3: Multiply by your activity factor

The more active you are, the more protein you need for every pound of lean body mass:

  • sedentary — 0.5 g
  • lightly active — 0.6 g
  • moderately active — 0.7 g
  • active — 0.8 g
  • very active — 0.9 g

Your goal doesn't change the number. In the Zone, your protein needs stay the same whether you want to lose weight or maintain it.

Step 4: Divide by 7

Divide your daily protein in grams by 7, the protein in one block, and round to a whole number. The minimum is 11 blocks a day for women and 14 for men, and the maximum is 40.

Two worked examples

  • Woman, 143 lb, 30% body fat, moderately active: 100 lb lean body mass × 0.7 = 70 g protein → 10 blocks. That's below the minimum, so the result is 11 blocks a day.
  • Man, 187 lb, 20% body fat, active: 150 lb lean body mass × 0.8 = 120 g protein → 17 blocks a day.

How to split your blocks across the day

The Zone works best with three meals and two small snacks, with no more than five hours between them. A simple way to split your blocks:

  • 11 blocks: 3 for breakfast, 3 for lunch, 3 for dinner and two 1-block snacks
  • 17 blocks: 5 for breakfast, 5 for lunch, 5 for dinner and two 1-block snacks

What your blocks look like on a plate

Numbers are easier when you can see them as real food. Every recipe in ZoneIt has its blocks calculated already, so you can pick one and adjust the portion to your number. A few to start with:

You'll find all of them in our Zone recipes.

What about calories?

You don't need to count them. When protein, carbs and fat come in equal blocks, the amount takes care of itself. As a rough guide, one block is about 91 kcal, so 11 blocks are roughly 1,000 kcal and 17 blocks about 1,550 kcal.

When to recalculate

  • when your weight or measurements change, since your lean body mass changes too
  • when your activity level changes, for example when you start or stop training

Taking your measurements every two to three weeks is a good rhythm.

Skip the math with ZoneIt

In the ZoneIt app, you enter your measurements once and your daily blocks are calculated for you. When you add new measurements, the app shows your updated number so you can recalculate in one tap. If you already know your number from a nutritionist, you can set it manually. Then you log your meals in the diary and see right away whether each one is balanced.
